Day 593
2 documented wins
Fair competition in livestock markets
The win
A second order the same day directed USDA to expand Packers and Stockyards investigations of unfair packer practices and to widen interstate shipment for eligible meat. Agriculture is to stand up a one-stop coordinator for small processors and speed state participation in cooperative inspection programs.
For Americans
A rancher who can butcher locally and sell across a state line is not stuck taking whatever the nearest mega-packer offers. That is the kitchen-table version of antitrust.
Supporting America’s ranchers
The win
Trump signed an order for a 90-day review of rancher rules at Interior, Agriculture, USTR, FDA, and SBA. Interior must decide whether gray wolves and Mexican wolves meet ESA delisting or downlisting criteria, update predator-loss compensation, and ease lethal-removal authorization when needed. Agriculture was told to review country-of-origin labeling for beef.
For Americans
A ranch that loses calves to wolves should not wait on a listing that no longer matches the herd. Country-of-origin labels are how a grocer can tell U.S. beef from an import.
